In Year 1 we look to build on the fantastic learning experiences that the children have had throughout the Foundation Stage. They continue to be encouraged to develop their independence, organise themselves and become effective and self-motivated learners.  In Year 1 the children’s learning is linked to areas of interest using Topics.

Our Curriculum

We cover all subjects of the National Curriculum apart from MFL (modern foreign languages). These include Maths, Literacy, Science, ICT, History, Geography, RE, JIGSAW, Art, DT and Music.

In our teaching we will…
-Work in partnership with parents for activities such as reading at home.
-Plan activities which excite and engage the children and move them on in their learning.
-Create WOW moments based around topics
-Give the children real-life problems to solve.
-Enable children to work as part of a community within the class and the wider area.

We continually assess children during Year 1 in Phonics, Reading, Writing and Maths.
We will meet with you at parent’s evenings to discuss your child’s progress and next steps.
We will host a parent’s information evening in September.
At the end of the year you will receive your child’s report.

If you need to see us for any reason please feel free to come in at the beginning or end of the day (the end is usually less busy!). We have an open door policy in Year 1 and are always happy to help you in any way we can.
