A typical week in Year 2

  • English & Maths every day
  • Topic based learning each week
  • Science, Computing, PE, Music, Jigsaw also taught in afternoons
  • Tuesday afternoon Teaching Assistants lead the learning – Jigsaw and ICT

 

Topics

We have four topics during the year all based on ‘Big Questions’.
  1. Where in the world do wild animals live? (Science and Geography)
  2. What makes us super? (History and Science)
  3. What made the fire of London great? (History)
  4. Is it super here, there or everywhere? (Geography)

 

English

Reading
  • All children will read individually in school at least once a week with an adult.  Some children will read more often.
  • As the year progresses every child will take part in a weekly guided reading session as well.

Word level work
  • Daily 20 minute session focusing on phonics and spelling

Writing
  • Words, sentences, paragraphs.
  • Punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Imaginary & factual.
  • Genres include stories, instructions, explanations, poems…
  • -Writing in Year 2 often begins by reading a book to stimulate thoughts and ideas.

 

Maths

Mental maths
  • Recall and mental strategies (use of whiteboards)

Main Teaching
  • Formal, investigation, games, challenges

Areas of mathematics covered across the year
  • Number – number and place value
  • Number – addition and subtraction
  • Number – multiplication and division
  • Number – fractions
  • Measurement
  • Geometry – properties of shapes
  • Geometry – position and direction
  • Statistics

 

Things to remember:

  • PE: 2 afternoon sessions (Wednesday and Thursday Indoor, Friday – Outdoor).
  • Long hair tied back and no jewellery on these days please. Shorts for indoor and outdoor unless very cold.
  • Please make sure your child has a water bottle (any bottle with a sports cap will do!).
  • Children are asked to refresh their water each day. We will send these home each Friday for a thorough wash.
