How Ashcombe Primary School Teaches British Values

Ashcombe actively promotes the four core British Values - Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect & Tolerance, through a wide range of experiences woven throughout school life. Each British value is revisited in fortnightly assemblies.

Below is a clear breakdown of how else we embed British Values into our school.


1. Democracy

  • School Council gives pupils a real voice in decisions.
  • Whole-school referendum held during UK Parliament Week.
  • Pupil voice in OPAL play choices and school improvement ideas.
  • Jigsaw PSHE curriculum includes democratic processes and participation.

2. Rule of Law

  • Behaviour curriculum reinforced through assemblies.
  • Forest School teaches safe boundaries and responsible behaviour.
  • ProjectEVOLVE and Online Safety lessons teach responsible digital behaviour.
  • Jigsaw curriculum develops understanding of rules, fairness and shared expectations.

3. Individual Liberty

  • OPAL Play provides freedom to explore, create and make choices.
  • Performing arts, clubs and enrichment offer opportunities for self-expression.
  • "30 Things To Do" and Forest School encourage independence and personal initiative.
  • Mental Health Curriculum helps children understand and manage their own emotions.
  • Student leadership roles allow children to choose pathways for responsibility.

4. Mutual Respect

  • Positive Projects build empathy and respect for diverse groups and communities.
  • Visits and visitors support cultural understanding and wider-world awareness.
  • Assemblies celebrate diversity, role models, national events and respect.
  • OPAL play promotes inclusive play, cooperation and conflict resolution.
  • Jigsaw PSHE explicitly teaches respect, relationships and understanding difference.
