Reading in Year 1

At our school, we believe reading is a vital life skill and the foundation for all learning. In Year 1, we place a strong emphasis on developing children’s language, phonics and comprehension, alongside a genuine enjoyment of books and stories.

Key Stage 1 – Year 1 Expectations

In Year 1, children are supported to:

❇️Apply phonics knowledge to read unfamiliar words
❇️Read common exception words
❇️Read aloud with increasing fluency and expression
❇️Talk about what they have read, including characters, settings and events
❇️Begin to make simple inferences and predictions

Reading in Year 1 includes:

❇️Daily phonics lessons
❇️Whole-class reading sessions
❇️Small-group guided reading for targeted support
❇️Regular opportunities to read independently

Reading at home

Reading at home plays an essential role in supporting both the EYFS Early Learning Goals and KS1 outcomes. We encourage families to:

❇️Read regularly with their child
❇️Talk about stories and pictures
❇️Celebrate effort as well as progress

These shared experiences help develop fluency, comprehension and confidence.
