Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

In Year 1, we are here to nurture, encourage and inspire every child as they begin their learning journey. We value each child as an individual and strive to help them grow in confidence, independence and a love of learning. Please speak to a member of the Year 1 team if you have any questions or need any support or clarification – we are always happy to help.

Reading in Year 1

Reading in Year 1

At our school, we believe reading is a vital life skill and the foundation for all learning. In Year 1, we place a strong emphasis on developing children’s language, phonics and comprehension, alongside a genuine enjoyment of books and stories.

Key Stage 1 – Year 1 Expectations

In Year 1, children are supported to:

❇️Apply phonics knowledge to read unfamiliar words
❇️Read common exception words
❇️Read aloud with increasing fluency and expression
❇️Talk about what they have read, including characters, settings and events
❇️Begin to make simple inferences and predictions

Reading in Year 1 includes:

❇️Daily phonics lessons
❇️Whole-class reading sessions
❇️Small-group guided reading for targeted support
❇️Regular opportunities to read independently

Reading at home

Reading at home plays an essential role in supporting both the EYFS Early Learning Goals and KS1 outcomes. We encourage families to:

❇️Read regularly with their child
❇️Talk about stories and pictures
❇️Celebrate effort as well as progress

These shared experiences help develop fluency, comprehension and confidence.
