Reading in Year 5
In Year 5, children continue to develop as confident, fluent and thoughtful readers. Building on earlier reading skills, they are supported to deepen their understanding, broaden their vocabulary and respond to a wide range of increasingly challenging texts.
Children are encouraged to read widely for both pleasure and purpose, developing independence, stamina and a growing appreciation of different authors, genres and text types.
Children in Year 5 are supported to:
❇️ Read age-appropriate texts fluently and with expression
❇️ Use a wide and growing vocabulary to understand meaning
❇️ Explain, justify and discuss ideas using evidence from the text
❇️ Make inferences and predictions based on details stated and implied
❇️ Summarise key ideas and identify themes
❇️ Compare texts and authors and recognise different writing styles
Reading in Year 5 includes:
❇️ Whole-class reading sessions focused on comprehension and discussion
❇️ Guided reading in small groups to support and challenge understanding
❇️ Explicit teaching of vocabulary and reading strategies
❇️ Regular independent reading to build stamina and enjoyment
❇️ Opportunities to read across the curriculum

Reading at Home
Reading at home continues to play an important role in supporting children’s progress in Upper Key Stage 2.
We encourage families to:
❇️ Encourage regular independent reading
❇️ Listen to children read aloud where possible, even as readers become more fluent
❇️ Discuss books, characters, themes and viewpoints
❇️ Ask questions that prompt deeper thinking and reflection
❇️ Celebrate effort, engagement and progress
These shared experiences help strengthen comprehension, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of reading.
