Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to our Year 6 page! We are so pleased to be working in partnership with you during this important and exciting final year of primary school. Together, we aim to create a warm, supportive environment where every child feels valued, confident, and ready for the next steps on their journey to secondary school. If you ever have any questions or worries, please know that an adult will always be available after school to help. We’re looking forward to a wonderful year filled with growth, achievement and happy memories.

Year 6 Learning Plan

Year 6 Typical School Day

Our school day starts at 8:45am where an adult will great your child at the door with a personalised greeting selected by the children.

Please ensure that your child has their locker key and a coat in school every day as we will be going outside come rain or shine.

What have Year 6 been up to recently?

Please see the gallery below of some of the fabulous things that Year 6 children have been doing this year.

PE

Year 6 our PE lessons focus on building confidence, teamwork and a positive attitude towards keeping active.

Children take part in a wide range of sports and physical challenges that help develop their fitness, coordination and resilience as they prepare for secondary school. We also encourage pupils to recognise the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle that they can carry with them into the future.

Our PE days can change throughout the year. For Term 4 our PE days will be Friday for all year 6 classes. Please ensure your child comes to school on those days wearing suitable PE kit.

Reading at Our School

At our school, we believe that reading is a vital life skill and a gateway to learning, confidence and independence. As a supportive and inclusive school community, we work hard to nurture a genuine love of reading in every child, whatever their starting point.

Children are encouraged to explore a wide range of genres, authors and text types, and as their fluency and understanding grow, they are supported to choose books independently from our well-stocked library. This helps children to develop confidence, curiosity and enjoyment as readers.

We recognise the importance of reading together. Even in Year 6, we continue to encourage children to read aloud to an adult at home. Sharing books in this way supports fluency and expression, and creates valuable opportunities for reassurance, encouragement and discussion.

Reading is embedded throughout the school day. Children take part in whole-class reading sessions, alongside guided reading in smaller groups, where they receive focused support and encouragement to deepen their understanding.

Spellings

Please see documents below which show the spellings covered in Year 6

Maths

Year 6 maths helps children develop confidence and fluency as they prepare for the important step into secondary school.

In Year 6 there is a strong focus on arithmetic, with pupils practising key written and mental methods and completing a weekly arithmetic quiz to help strengthen and secure these essential skills. Alongside this, children deepen their understanding of number, shape, measure and reasoning, applying their knowledge to increasingly rich problem‑solving activities.

Homework

Year 6 have homework set on Fridays and should be handed in on a Friday. Homework should take no longer than one hour. Please contact a member of the year 6 team if you need support with your homework before Friday morning.
