Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

In Year 2 we are here to nuture, value and motivate every child on their learning journey. Please come and speak to one of the team if you have any questions or require support or clarification on anything.

Year 2 Learning Plan

Year 2 Typical School Day

Our school day starts at 8:45am with a journaling task. This is a "soft start" tool to help children regulate their nervous systems before beginning the academic learning of the day.

Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day, as we endeavour to get out at break and lunchtime whatever the weather!

What have Year 2 been up to recently?

Please see the gallery below of some of the fabulous things that Year 2 children have been doing this year.

PE

Our PE days can change throughout the year. For Term 4 our PE days will be Monday and Friday. Please ensure your child comes to school on those days wearing suitable PE kit.

Reading in Year 2

At Ashcombe we believe that reading is an essential life skill and the foundation of all learning. In Year 2 we continue to develop the strong early reading foundations begun in EYFS and Year 1, helping children to become fluent, confident readers who love books. We place a firm focus on the technical aspects of reading - phonics, language development and comprehension, but at the heart of our reading curriculum is nurturing a love for reading both stories and information texts.

In Year 2, children build on their decoding skills to develop greater fluency, understanding and independence as readers.

They are supported to:
❇️ Read age-appropriate texts with confidence and accuracy
❇️ Use phonics knowledge and sight vocabulary effectively
❇️ Read with expression and awareness of punctuation
❇️ Answer questions about what they have read
❇️ Make predictions, inferences and connections within texts
❇️ Discuss vocabulary and explain the meaning of words

Reading in Year 2 includes:
❇️ Continued phonics and spelling support where needed
❇️ Whole-class reading lessons focused on comprehension
❇️ Guided reading sessions to support and challenge learners
❇️ Independent reading to build stamina and enjoyment

Books we have read so far this year:

Reading at Home

Reading at home plays an essential role in supporting children’s progress throughout Key Stage 1. We encourage families to:
❇️ Read regularly with their child
❇️ Talk about stories, characters and new vocabulary
❇️ Ask questions and encourage children to explain their thinking
❇️ Celebrate effort as well as progress

These shared experiences help develop fluency, comprehension, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.
